WHO will be receiving the funds raised?
NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FOUNDATION is a non-profit charity based in New Orleans with programs in the areas of education, economic development, and cultural events. These programs include The Don "Moose" Jamison Heritage School of Music, a free after school music program for kids age 11-17; the Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series that delves into the history of the African Diaspora and the cultural history of New Orleans; Raising the Roof Program, that helps musicians find affordable housing in New Orleans in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity, and many more.
FIGMENT is a grassroots effort, organized and run entirely by volunteers as a gift to the host cities (that in 2011 included NYC, Boston, Detroit, and Jackson, MS). FIGMENT fosters emerging artists, encourages participation, and engages youth and families while avoiding commercialism and corporate branding. FIGMENT is always free, and at a time when so many people are struggling to get by, FIGMENT is proud to celebrate an abundance of inspiration. Despite the scarcity all around us, there is no shortage of creativity, innovation, and passion. FIGMENT provides a place where people can bring the plentiful gifts that they have to offer and share the wealth.
SONS OF ITALY // COOLEY'S ANEMIA FOUNDATION Since its founding in 1905, The Order Sons of Italy in America have grown to over 700 local chapters nationwide while continuing to foster education and recognition for the culture of Italy. Lt. Joseph Petrosino Lodge is the only Sons of Italy lodge located in New York's Historical Little Italy, and has chosen Cooley's Anemia foundation to receive their portion of the donations from the Mardi Gras fundraiser. The Cooley's Anemia Foundation is dedicated to advancing the treatment and cure for this fatal blood disease, enhancing the quality of life of patients and educating the medical profession, trait carriers and the public about Cooley's anemia/thalassemia major.
What is NYC’s Most Authentic Mardi Gras Party & Fundraiser?
The 7th Annual Mardi Gras Party is praised to be the most authentic Mardi Gras party in town by New York locals and New Orleans aficionados alike. This Annual event grew out of a friendship between New Orleans to Brooklyn transplant, CUNY Professor Dr. Matthew Day, and local downtown lawyer and New Orleans aficionado, Wylie Stecklow. After spending many years in search of the best NYC Mardi Gras party, it was evident that there was a void in NYC for a celebration that truly represented New Orleans heritage by celebrating its music, cuisine, history, and spirit. With the devastation brought on by Hurricane Katrina, it seemed obvious that the event should be a fundraiser to raise money to send down to New Orleans. The first two annual events did indeed raise money for the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund, and subsequent yearly events have raised money to benefit other NOLA charities such as Tipitina's Foundation as well as local charities such as St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, Asian Americans for Equality, and Community Programming of the Chinese American Planning Council.
